Library workshop on "A Model Library: In the Era of Information Technology" Organized at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata.



ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata: One day Library workshop on “A Model Library: In the Era of Information Technology” was organized by Library Section of ICAR-National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata on 26.11.2014 at NIRJAFT Auditorium. The Chief Guest of the programme was Mr. V. Jayaraman, Librarian and Information Officer National Library. The workshop was inaugurated by lighting of holy lamp by Dr. V. Jayaraman, Dr. D. Nag, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT and Dr. S.N. Chattopadhyay, PS and Chairman, NIRJAFT Library Committee. In the welcome address, Dr. D. Nag emphasised on importance of the modern library in the context of advanced knowledge of information technology. Dr. V. Jayaraman expressed his gratitude for organising such an important workshop. Dr. S.N. Chattopadhyay told about the context of the technical session of today’s workshop and proposed a vote of thanks to all the dignitaries and staffs present in the workshop. The technical session was chaired by Dr.Chaitali Dutta, Professor, Department of Library and Information Sciences Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The technical session consists of deliberation of modern library architecture, e-resources, preservation of old library documents, centralised information dissemination system, on-line remote access. Delegates from ICAR-CIFRI, IJIRA, British Library, Asiatic Society, National Library etc. participated in the workshop.


2nd CR Nodder Memorial Lecture Organized at NIRJAFT, Kolkata.


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: 2nd C R Nodder Memorial Lecture was organized on November 11, 2014 at ICAR-NIRJAFT Auditorium.

The 2nd C R Nodder Memorial Lecture was organized on November 11, 2014 at ICAR-NIRJAFT Auditorium.    Hon’ble DDG (Engg.) Dr K Alagusundaram graced the occasion with his presence and Dr V Subramanium, Ex-Professor, Anna University, Chennai and Former Chairman, RAC, ICAR-NIRJAFT was the invited speaker for the occasion to speak on “Thermal Conductivity of Fabrics”. Dr A N Roy, Head, ToT Div. delivered the welcome address while D Nag, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT gave the introductory speech on Hon’ble DDG and on the invited speaker.

Hon’ble DDG, Dr K Alagusundaram delivered a very precise and inspiring speech on responsibilities of scientists in serving the nation through their research work.

The invited speaker Dr V Subramanium expressing his gratitude to ICAR-NIRJAFT management for being called upon as invited speaker, started off his lecture on “Thermal Conductivity of Fabrics”. He very meticulously went through the works carried out so far on thermal conductivity of fabrics and on the development of equipments for measuring the parameter. Dr Subramanium very clearly described the science of thermal conductivity and the need of background knowledge on thermal conductivity and also of thermal resistance while dealing with fabrics and pointed out the arenas where more research endeavor is needed.

The programme ended with vote of thanks delivered by Dr G Bose, Head, MP Div., ICAR-NIRJAFT.

NIRJAFT, Kolkata: Visit of DDG (Agril. Engg) to ICAR-NIRJAFT.

Dr. K. Alagusudaram made his maiden visit to ICAR National Institute of Research on jute and Allied Fibre Technology on 11.11.2014 and attended 2nd CR Nodder memorial lecture as Chief Guest. He visited all the division and action of the institute and interacted with different staffs. A special function was arranged in the institute auditorium where he was felicitated by Dr. D. Nag, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT. Dr. Alagusundaram then addressed all the staffs of the institute. In his lecture he reminded the staff of the institute regarding contribution of ICAR for providing food to all our countrymen. He urged all the scientists to contribute their best for improvement of livelihood of jute growers and development of jute industry. He expressed his gratitude to all previous Directors and present Director for making NIRJAFT, Kolkata a great research institute in the area of fibre science and technology.


Model Training Programme inaugurated at ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata.


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: Model Training Programme on “Value addition through product diversification on Jute & Allied fibres” is being organized by ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata.

A Model Training Programme on “Value addition through product diversification on Jute & Allied fibres” is being organized by ICAR-NIRJAFT, Kolkata for the Scientist, Lecturers, and Officers of different government organization during November 10-17, 2014. The training is sponsored by Directorate of Extension, Department of Agriculture & cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. The inaugural programme was held on November 10, 2014 at the Institute Auditorium. Dr H S Sen, Former Director, ICAR-CRIJAF was the Chief Guest and Mr. O. P. Prahladka , Managing Director, Hitaishi kk Manufacturing Co. Pvt. Ltd. was the Guest of Honour Dr A N Roy, Course Director and Head, ToT Division welcomed the gathering followed by the introduction of the participants. Dr D Nag, Director, ICAR-NIRJAFT, in his address explained the objective of this training. Mr O P Prahladka, complimented the Institute for organizing the programme. Dr H S Sen, in his address highlighted the possibilities of product diversification in Jute & allied fibre sector. He said that productivity and diversification are the major thrust area of this sector and stressed on collaborative work between CRIJAF and NIRJAFT in this direction. He also elaborated on the importance of JTM. The programme ended with the vote of thanks from Dr L K Nayak, Co-Course Director and Senior Scientist, ToT Division.


National Level Training Organized at NIRJAFT, Kolkata.


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: Three days National Level Training on "Production and Retting Technology of Jute/ Mesta/ Ramie/ Sun-hemp including Other RElated Aspects" organized at NIRJAFT, Kolkata during August 20-22, 2014.

A three days National Level Training on “Production and retting technology of Jute/Mesta/Ramie/Sun-hemp including other related aspects” sponsored by  National Food Security Mission (NFSM), Commercial Crops, Department of Agriculture & Co-operation, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India was organized in the Division of Transfer of Technology during August 20-22, 2014. Twenty Five trainees from different jute growing districts of West Bengal have participated in this programme. In the Inaugural session on August 20, 2014; Dr. Alok Nath Roy, Head, Transfer of Technology Division & Course Director welcomed the Guests and Participants and briefed about the Training Programme. Dr. P.K.Das, Ex-Professor, BCKV graced the occasion as Chief Guest and in his Inaugural address stressed upon the importance of production and processing of jute and allied fibres. Dr. K. Manoharan, Director, Directorate of Jute Development, Kolkata, West Bengal has graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and complemented the role of NIRJAFT in organizing such training programmes. Experts in the fields of retting, allied fibres extraction & processing, Geo-textiles, Ornamental fabrics, Composites, Particle Boards, Hand-made paper etc. have delivered lectures during the programme. Visit to different Divisional Laboratories of NIRJAFT was part of the programme through which the trainees were benefitted a lot. The valedictory cum interactive session of the Trainees with Scientists of NIRJAFT was held on August 22, 2014 with the Chairmanship of Dr. D. Nag, Director,NIRJAFT. Certificates were distributed to the participants for their successful completion of the Training.


International Conference on Natural Fibres, NIRJAFT (ICAR), Kolkata.



NIRJAFT, Kolkata: International Conference on Natural Fibres organized by TINFS, NIRJAFT, Kolkata during August 1-3, 2014.

The Indian Natural Fibre Society organized International Conference on Natural Fibres (Theme: Jute & Allied Fibres) in collaboration with National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology (NIRJAFT), Kolklata; Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibre (CRIJAF), Barrackpore and National Jute Board (NJB), Kolkata from 01-03 August, 2014 at Kolkata. The conference was inaugurated by His Excellency Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble President of India at Bhasa Bhavan, National Library, Kolkata on 01st August, 2014 in presence of His Excellency Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Hon’ble Governor of West Bengal; Shri Firhad Hakim, Hon’ble Minister-in-Charge, Urban Development and Town and Country Planning & Municipal Affairs, Govt. of West Bengal; Dr S Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR; Dr Subrata Gupta, Jute Commissioner, Ministry of Textile, Govt. of India, Kolkata; Shri Raghabendra Gupta, Chairman, Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), Kolkata and Dr Debasis Nag, Director, NIRJAFT & President, The Indian Natural Fibre Society. Dr S Ayyappan welcomed all the dignitaries and explained the importance of organizing this International Conference which was attended by 15 delegates from 5 different countries. Shri Firhad Hakim told about the importance of jute fibre for the farmers of this part of the country and jute mills located in the state. Shri Pranab Mukherjee stressed upon the new development of appropriate technology and advised to formulate roadmap by the different research institutes and agencies involved in the development of this natural fibre. Dr D Nag proposed the vote of thanks. In the next two days, Technical sessions were conducted at The Oberoi Grand where two parallel sessions run simultaneously, one in Agriculture and the other in Technology aspects. The Poster session was also organized in this occasion.


Agri Opening of Exhibit-cum-Sales Corner at NIRJAFT (ICAR), Kolkata.

In order to promote Jute, the golden fibre; An Exhibit-cum-Sales corner was opened at NIRJAFT, Kolkata. Some products made by Trainees of the Institute were put up on display and sale. Inaugurating the event, Dr.K.K. Singh, ADG (Process Engineering), ICAR congratulated Dr. Debasis Nag, Director, NIRJAFT for this new initiative through which diversified value added R&D products of the Institute can reach every corner of the country. Dr S.D. Despande; Dr. P.G. Patil and Mr. Mahadeb Dutta, IMC Members, NIRJAFT along with the Heads of Divisions of NIRJAFT were present at this event.

Zonal Technology Management – Business Planning and Development unit, NIRJAFT, under National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), organized a one day Agri-Investors’ Meet at NIRJAFT, Kolkata, on March 26, 2014. The one-day Program aimed to create awareness and build competencies on Agribusiness Establishments among Entrepreneurs. The meet was attended by a no. of entrepreneurs, financial institutions and other stakeholders. Mrs. T. S. Raji Gain, Chief General Manager, NABARD was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Mr. M. N. Debnath, Director, MSME-DI and Mr. Sudipto Saha, Jt. Director, MSME & T, Govt. of West Bengal were the Guests of Honour. Mr. P. Chakraborty, Chief Manager, United Bank of India, Garia Branch, Mr. Anjan Dutta, Ex. Chief Regional Manager, United Bank of India & Director Finance, Seacom Engineering College, Sankrail, Howrah, West Bengal and Mr. N. K. Sengupta, Financial Consultant were the other dignitaries present.

In the inaugural session, Dr. A. N. Roy, CPI, ZTM-BPD Unit, NIRJAFT in his welcome address introduced the dignitaries on Dias and briefed on the importance of Investors’ Meet.

Dr. D. Nag, Director, NIRJAFT, in his welcome address acknowledged the presence of all the dignitaries, valued participants and staffs of NIRJAFT. He appealed to the entrepreneurs to go for establishments with ICAR technologies and to look up to different schemes of Govt. of India, Govt. of West Bengal, NABARD and banks for financial support. With a hope to make the meet successful he concluded his short inspiring speech thanking the audience.

Welcoming all the participants, the Guest of Honor, Mr. Sudipto Saha, Jt. Director, MSME & T, Govt. of West Bengal appreciated the idea of Investors’ Meet and briefed on different schemes for micro, small and medium enterprises offered by Govt. of West Bengal. Mr. M. N. Debnath, Director, MSME-DI, detailed on the schemes and trainings offered by Govt. of India for micro and small scale enterprises.

Two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were exchanged. One was between NIRJAFT & Revati Commercial Pvt. Ltd. and the other was between NIRJAFT & Margdarshak Dev. Services.

Chief Guest, Mrs. T. S. Raji Gain, Chief General Manager, NABARD was the next speaker. She appreciated the achievements and role played by Transfer of Technology Division, NIRJAFT and spoke on NABARD, its schemes, programmes, achievements and near future plans.

The inaugural session ended with vote of thanks delivered by Dr. A. N. Roy, CPI, ZTM-BPD Unit, NIRJAFT.

Post tea session started off with the lecture by Mr. Anjan Dutta, Ex. Chief Regional Manager, United Bank of India. Mr. Dutta in his lecture covered the topics namely, the advantages of entrepreneurs and their importance, information and basic knowledge needed by entrepreneurs before going for a start up, knowledge on banking and on procedures to be followed while availing loans for new ventures.

The podium was then taken over by Mr. N. K. Sengupta, Financial Consultant. He very meticulously lectured on procedures and method followed at bankers end while considering a loan application and also on the way a new project should be placed before bankers by lenders to easily and smoothly avail the financial support at the earliest.

Both Mr. Dutta and Mr. Sengupta responded to the queries placed by entrepreneurs.

The meet ended with vote of thanks delivered by Dr. A. N. Roy, CPI, ZTM-BPD Unit, NIRJAFT followed by lunch.


Review meeting for projects funded by NFBSFARA, ICAR, New Delhi at NIRJAFT (ICAR), Kolkata, February, 2014.



NIRJAFT, Kolkata: A review meeting of projects funded by the NFBSFARA, New Delhi was conducted at Director’s conference meeting room, National Institute of Research on Jute and Allied Fibre Technology, Kolkata on 22.02.2014. At the outset, Dr. Debasis Nag, Director, NIRJAFT welcomed all the participants. Dr. Maganala Rai, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Bihar and Former Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR and the Chairman of the Empowered Committee of NFBSFARA, elaborated the importance of the basic and strategic research projects formulated under NFBSFARA. The progress of the following projects was presented by the respective principal investigator, followed by the discussion on the progress by the house.

National Science Day Celebration at NIRJAFT, February, 2014.


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: National Institute of Research on Jute & Allied Fibre Technology (NIRJAFT), Kolkata celebrated the National Science Day on 28th February, 2014 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist and Nobel Laureate Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman on 28th February 1928.

Forty two students of XI class and two teachers of the Future Foundation School, Kolkata have taken active participation in this programme at NIRJAFT. This programme was coordinated by Dr. Sanjoy Debnath, Senior Scientist and associated by Dr. S Banik, Principal Scientist, Dr. S.B. Roy, Sr. Scientist, Dr. Rakesh Ghosh, Scientist, Dr. Utpal Sen, Asstt. Chief Technical Officer of the institute for demonstration of different technologies, products processes developed by NIRJAFT.

The programme ended with a an interactive discussion headed by Dr. G. Bose, Director (Acting), Principal Scientist & Head, MP Division and Dr. AN Roy, Principal Scientist & Head, TOT Division held at NIRJAFT Auditorium. Some of the students expressed their ideas to improve some of the products /technologies. Teachers also expressed their gratitude to NIRJAFT for arranging such programme for the students.


Book Fair Organized by NIRJAFT Library, January, 2014.


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: A “Book fair was organized by NIRJAFT library on 15th January, 2014 in the ground floor of C T building from 11 A. M. to 4 P. M. to procure books for Institute library. Different book suppliers viz., Bharat Book Distributors, Asian Book Pvt. Ltd., Bindings, Trans world Books and S. Chand participated and displayed books in various subjects like jute and allied fibres, Chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences, Textile technology, dyeing and reference books etc. The “Book fair” was inaugurated by Dr. G. Bose, HoD, Mechanical Processing Division and In-charge, Administration. Principal Scientist and Chairman of the library committee Dr S N Chattopadhyay explained the need for holding this book fair at NIRJAFT to the visitors. A large number of Scientists, Technical, Administrative staff and few distinguished delegates visited the “Book fair” and exercised their option for procurement of the books of their choice by filling up the requisition slips. The requisition slips were collected by Library- In- Charge, Dr. Rina Naiya for further processing and the copies of the requisition slips were retained by the respective books suppliers.


International Conference on Natural Fibres


NIRJAFT, Kolkata: The Indian Natural Fibre Society will going to organize International Conference on Natural Fibres from August 3-5, 2014 at Bhasa Bhavan, National Library, Kolkata. The theme of the conference is Jute & Allied Fibres. The main goal of the International Seminar on Natural fibres/ Jute & Allied Fibres is to raise the profile of these fibers and to emphasize their value to consumers while helping to sustain the incomes of the farmers. In addition, the International Seminar will promote the efficiency and sustainability of production of these natural fibres, encourage appropriate policy responses from governments to the problems faced by the concerned industries, and foster an effective and enduring international partnership for the prospect of these natural fibres in the light of growing eco-consciousness across the world.
