A Value Chain for Coconut Fibre and its by-products - NAIP Project

This institute is pursuing a national agriculture innovation project (NAIP) on A value chain for coconut fibre and its by-products: Manufacture of diversified products of higher value and better marketability to enhance the economic returns offarmers since 2009. The NAIP Component-II of the project focuses on the diversification of products along with development of new products from coconut fibre and coconut pith products for better marketability, revenue generation from the farmers' level to entrepreneurs with the following objectives.

• Technology refinement and upgradation in graded and segregated coconut fibre processing to enhance productivity and quality of products.

• To develop technology for manufacture of innovative and biodegradable products from coconut pith through value addition for better uti­lization of by­products and preservation of environment.

• To promote production of diversified value added products from coconut fibre to ensure better returns for the farmers.

 

This project is a consortium-based work with sanctioned budget of Rs 511.96 lakh with the following partners

1. Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

2. Indian Rubber Manufacturers' Research Association, Thane, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

3. T.M. N.Resources Research & Development Centre, Trivandrum, Kerala.

4. Rubber Park India (P) Ltd, Ernakulum, Kerala

 

Salient achievements

A. Technology refinement and up gradation in graded and segregated coconut fibre processing to enhance productivity and quality of products

• Identification of 79 locations based on specific quality coconut ecotype for fibre.

• Development of fibre grading technique.

• Development of chemical softening, bleaching and dyeing of unretted coconut fibre.

• Design and development of automated shuttle less high speed weaving machine and PLC control spinning machines.

• Development of technology for spinning of jute-coconut fibre blended yarn in existing jute spinning machinery.

Design and development of modified energy efficient disintegrator, de-fibring, and drawing machine

• Development of hand-loom for weaving coconut-jute blended yarn with jacquard weaving system.

Physical & mechanical characterization of husk and coconut fibre for developing fibre extraction, segregation and fibre processing machinery.

• Development of coconut-cotton and coconut-jute composite yarn.

 

B. To develop technology for manufacture of innovative and biodegradable products from coconut pith through value addition for better utilization of by-products and preservation of environment.

• Field demonstration on chemical softening and dyeing of coconut fibre.

• Development of NBR, CR and CSM rubber compound using coir pith for gauntlet.

• Preparation of coir pith filler.

• Development of silicone rubber compound using coir pith for moderator block, chappal sole.

 

C. To promote production of diversified value added products from coconut fibre to ensure better returns for the farmers

•   Development of EPDM rubber compound using coir pith for extruded rubber beading for window sealing

•  Jute - coconut fibre blended yarn and fabric for home furnishing, wall hangings, carpet makings, bags and ornamental slipper strap making.

•   Coconut fibre yarn for geotextiles and agro textiles as backing material of grass carpet making.

•  Application of coir pith filler for making of gaskets, gauntlet, blocks, pots, chappal sole, floor tiles, moulds for producing lighter products with natural and synthetic rubber.

Patents filed/granted

• A provisional patent entitled Method of chemical retting of coconut fibres and preparing yarns from said fibres has been filed by the institute vide 330/KOL/2011 dated 14th March 2011.

A provisional patent entitled Coconut fibre Segregator machine has been filed by CIRCOT Mumbai vide 345/MUM/2011 dated 07th February, 2011.

6th CIC and CAC Meetings and half-yearly workshop of the NAIP (coconute fibre) project were organised at CTCRI Auditorium, Thiruvanantapuram, Kerala during 27-28th September 2011.
