ICAR-NINFET organized workshop on Potential of Natural Fibres in Uttarakhand.

Kolkata, October, 23, 2021:

ICAR-National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology, Kolkata organized an awareness workshop on “Potential of Natural fibre in Uttarakhand with special reference to Nettle Fibres” at Laldhang, Haridwar, Uttarakhand in association with Raybaar Samiti on October 23, 2021.

Dr. D. B. Shakyawar, Director of the institute highlighted the importance of natural fibres for sustainable development of the society. He also emphasized that the Uttarakhand is one of potential state for Nettle, Vimal and Hemp fibres production, thus, a road map needs to be drawn for value chain of natural fibres, starting from collection of such plants to fibre-based product development to tap natural resources of the state.

Dr. A. N. Roy, Principal Investigator of the project highlighted the potential of these fibres in apparel and home textiles and demonstrated technologies developed under the CRP on Natural Fibres.

Ms. Shruti Lakhera founder of Raybaar Simity mentioned these fibre plants are available in plenty in Uttarakhand, however, a technological intervention is very much required in the direction of fibre extraction, retting, yarn making, colouration and product development. It will help in rural employment generation and women empowerment.

Mr. Prashant Lingual, Forest officer, Govt. of Uttarakhand requested all the stakeholders to utilize these important fibres for different products making and they would support to the possible extent. Around 65 persons including farmer engaged in such fibres participated in the workshop.
