Workshop on “Commercialization of Yak based products” organized

ICAR- National Institute of Natural Fibre Engineering and Technology, Kolkata organized one day workshop on “Commercialization of Yak based products” today. The workshop was organized in collaboration with ICAR- National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang.

In his welcome address, Dr. Mihir Sarkar, Director, ICAR- NRC on Yak, Dirang, emphasized the importance and impact of Yak on tribal people and society. He also stressed on the breed improvement of Yak for better fibre and milk production.  

Delivering his address to the tribal farmers of Arunachal Pradesh, Dr. D.B. Shayawar, Director, ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata highlighted the Yak as a God gifted treasure to the humans and we should explore the broad prospect of using the Yak fibre and its milk for the development of sustainable livelihood of the local people.  

In his deliberation, Dr. D. Medhi, Principal Scientist of ICAR- NRCY, emphasized marketing, entrepreneurship development possibilities on yak milk-based products like Ghee, Churpi, paneer, Yogurt, cream etc. along with yak genetic improvement, multiplication of germplasm.

Dr. A.N. Roy, Principal Scientist of ICAR-NINFET, presented different value addition of yak fibre in terms of bleaching, dyeing and discussed the spinning and weaving technology of yak fibre-based yarn. He also showed a SWOT analysis of yak hair fibre processing and highlighted the prospects of business and entrepreneurship development in yak fibre-based products.

The two institutes have jointly signed an MoU with budding entrepreneurs for the marketing of yak fibre products. Both the institutes identified common areas of convergence and recommended collaborative measures with full technical support from ICAR-NINFET, Kolkata.

A total of 76 tribal farmers of Arunachal Pradesh have participated in the workshop and were educated on the prospects of value addition of yak milk products, yak hair fibre-based products in particular.
